I just happened to be in the right place at the right time! This guy should have opened days ago, by my calculations, so I had little hope of him opening at all, but my daughter and I went out on the patio this morning and found him dark purple, a sign that he was almost ready to come out. Still, I hardly expected to actually witness the event, since all my past attempts had failed, but I grabbed my camera because I thought a picture of the purple chrysalis would be pretty. After taking some pictures, my daughter and I stayed on the patio while she practiced her "bubble gum, bubble gum, in a dish" skills. All of a sudden, I noticed the bottom of the chrysalis crack, grabbed my camera and FINALLY got my video!

During the next several hours, they pump fluid from their
abdomen into their wings.
When their wings are full, they expel the excess fluid and
continue to wait for their wings to strengthen.
Right after this picture, she fell. I gave her my finger to grab
onto and was able to move her inside to our butterfly house
until her wings were strong enough to fly.
