Clutter, Chaos and lots of Busyness

We've been busy lately! The whole house is in chaos as we are rearranging most of it. We've been in the process of switching all three of the kid's bedrooms and it has taken much longer than anticipated, but we're finally nearing the end. I will be so incredibly glad when everything is in it's place, everything that's garbage or being donated is out of my house and I can clean it from top to bottom. I don't deal well with clutter and it's taking a LOT of patience to live this way but the kids are mostly all moved into their new rooms. Once I can get my husband back, he's been working very long days all week, I think we can finally wrap this project up.

When we haven't been moving, rearranging, sorting and reorganizing we've been up to a lot outside of the house too.  We took a fun trip to the Science Museum where my younger two built miniature houses to withstand a "hurricane",  got to pet a 60 year old turtle, ride a giant yo-yo, stand in a hurricane simulator and play with lots of other cool stuff.

simulated hurricane, but my son's stayed intact almost to the end when
another house blew into his. Lesson of the day: it pays to have hurricane
ready neighbors!

There were a  team of contractors doing volunteer work at the church my husband pastors and the kids were there almost every day to help.  My son, especially, was in his element working alongside them. He was there every second he could be and now knows how to build an interior wall, build a bunk bed, putty a door frame and use a variety of tools. He came home filthy, stinky and blissfully happy. He also spent a day last week putting together his new dresser from Ikea. He did everything, frame and drawers, himself. He's becoming really handy to have around.

My oldest daughter has been volunteering at a local library with their children's program several days a week. She also does her own children's program at church once a week. The church is open during the week for the kids in the neighborhood to play basketball, playstation, pool and just hang out but we run a youth program Wednesday nights that's specifically geared for teens. When a bunch of younger kids started to show up, rather than have to turn them away, she started a program for them herself. She spends hours of her own time and money coming up with stories, music, puppet shows, craft projects and games to do with them. I am so immensely proud of her talent and creativity but especially of her giving heart. She recently organized a field trip for a few of them and we took them to the Children's Museum which was a lot of fun.

What do you do with giant blocks? Giant Jenga, of course!

So what has my youngest been up to? She rescued a baby bird, of course. The dog somehow got the bird and injured its wing. The girls rescued it and since it was still alive transferred it to a cage. She named the bird Jackie since she doesn't know if it's a girl or a boy. My son looked it up online and they think it's white winged dove. She's been feeding it and giving it water for about a week and a half now and Jackie seems to be doing well. The cage is small enough that it can't really flap its wing while it heals which seems like a good thing to me.   Jackie's gotten very tame and even lets my daughter hold it. Next week we'll probably let it go outside and see if it can fly yet. I'm really hoping it heals successfully since I'm not entirely interested in adding a wild bird to our menagerie of animals here at the moment.

Somewhere in all of this, my son broke his finger playing basketball so there were many Doctor's visits as well. My kids even got a free medical class while the Dr. used my son's hand to teach a Physician's Assistant in training all the various things she should be looking for when examining a hand. So that's some of what has been keeping us busy over the past few weeks. Hopefully we'll finish our projects soon and life can slow down a bit, at least for a little while.
