The kids played Mario Bros., something they haven't played in awhile, on the wii for most of the morning and afternoon. We also baked and decorated Halloween cookies, so they went back and forth between Mario and cookie making. I realized how old they're getting by the fact that they did almost all of the baking by themselves. I was mostly on clean up duty. In fact, my son insisted on transferring his cookies to the baking sheet himself when he thought I wasn't being careful enough. How quickly things change!
Late afternoon they put on bathing suits, went out in the backyard and played some games with plastic baggies full of water (we had no water balloons). They also got soapy water and lathered up the trampoline which I wasn't crazy about, although, I must admit, it was cool. I didn't like the idea of them jumping and flipping when it was so slippery but I said they could slip and slide, which they did for awhile. I brought the baby out for a little bit. She sat in the shade in her bouncy seat looking around, while I straightened a few things up.
When it was early evening, my son, daughter, the baby and I drove to a local college campus to go rollerblading with some friends, while my oldest stayed home with my husband and made dinner. We had a great time rollerblading. The weather was beautiful. There was a nice breeze. We had the bay beside us and stopped every once in awhile at the water so my friend's dog could play. We saw a school of fish leaping across the water together. It was so cool! We think something must have been after them. The kids also saw a bunch of little crabs and some jelly fish and I stopped to pick some flowers for a craft we plan to do.
Then we came home and ate the dinner my daughter made. Instead of making stuffed shells, she had the idea to mix everything together with small shells and bake it with mozzarella on the top. She called it unstuffed shells. It turned out really well! She also made homemade lemonade. While I cleaned up dinner, she gave the baby a bath. Right now, I'm sitting with a wonderfully clean smelling, sleeping baby wrapped tightly to my chest. I can feel her slow, rhythmic breathing and hear her periodically sucking her little fingers. The others are all watching TV in the next room. Soon we'll all head to bed.
It has been a really great day.
