Aravis and Dominick were out which left just Tanner and Xury and I at home. Xury has been on a 90s video game cartoon kick lately. She was obsessed with all things Sonic the Hedgehog for a week or so and has now discovered Mario Bros. Tanner and I had a chance to chat uninterrupted (this usually only happens at 1am) while Xury watched a couple episodes of Mario Bros. on Netflix.
When Mario was done we decided to make some art. I was just kind of making it up as I went along. I added some food coloring to sugar and thought we could could sprinkle it on glue. I thought it would just stick to the glue - maybe I was thinking of sand or salt? Instead it liquified which turned out pretty cool anyway.
Xury's
Mine. I was inhibited by the idea that it should look like something and therefore mine did not turn out as cool as Xury's.
Xury mixed all the colored sugars together and added some glue which led to making a "potion" with "ingredients" on the patio.
In the midst of all her stirring and mixing, she caught her very first lizard! She started out very tentatively trying to touch it and when I walked back out she had caught it, carried it across the patio and trapped it in a container. I helped her transfer it to her bug catcher for observation.
She was quite proud. She usually only "catches" dead things. Aravis loved so many critters to death when she was little that we now only observe and release anything we catch.
Later Aravis got out the borax, washing soda, glue, paint and water to experiment.
Different mixtures and different combinations produced different consistencies.
It was fun to play with and cool to look at.
And then we got out our favorite toys to play with from the garage - Imaginext!
Technically, they're for Xury to play with but everybody helped build because they're the best toys ever.
Xury really, really loves the whole damsel in distress, knight in shining armor storyline. It's the only thing she plays, ever. And please, do not suggest that the girl could save herself or, worse yet, the man. She. Can. Not. That's all.
Tanner ordered some Henna online and has had fun doodling on her brother and sisters. I love how Aravis's hand turned out.
And Dominick has been busying himself with Legos.
He made a checker board with pull out drawers to store the pieces.
Unfortunately, I didn't get a picture before he took them apart to make these.
A coin sorter
And a candy dispenser
The coin goes in,
enables the arm to push the drawer,
the candy is dispensed and the quarter drops to the side. Pretty darn cool. He made an even more complex version but I didn't get any pictures.
So that's some of what we've been up to lately.
