Christmas Crafts, Compassion and Kinetic sand

Our life is certainly not always idyllic. There are messes, noise (LOTS of noise), clutter, chaos, angry words, tears and grumpiness. But sometimes, curled up on a rainy day reading The Lord of the Rings to Aravis while she crafts, it feels pretty darn close.

She made this adorable little Christmas scene in a shoebox.

We've been busy decorating for Christmas....

And this girl has been playing with kinetic sand.

And playing with kinetic sand.

And playing with kinetic sand.

My in-laws gave us their old VCR and we've had fun buying old movies at Goodwill. So while she's been kinetic sanding she's also been watching Peter Pan, Beauty and the Beast, Barbie in the Nutcracker and lots of others.

She's also been building....

(The magnatiles make great fairy houses.)

Catching caterpillars

Doing some research.

Playing with trains

And play dough

 Aravis joined in too.

I'm in love with this. She also made a little cat and used them in a stop-action movie.

A week or so ago, the girls and I went to the Compassion Experience http://cts.compassion.com/events/ where we learned about one girl's life in the Phillipines.

We listened to her story while touring rooms depicting places in her life. We learned a lot and had some great conversations. Poverty in the U.S. and extreme poverty in developing countries are not new concepts to my kids but it was a good reminder of how disproportionate the world's resources are and ways that we can make a difference.

The girls have been into Playmobil lately so we took a trip to a Playmobil store and play area.

There was so much to see and play with,
think Xury could have played all day.

So, I guess, when all is said and done, it's far more of an idyllic life than not.
